Are you wondering how long an STD test appointment takes? On average, an STD test takes around 45 minutes, which allows time for you to meet directly with the nurse, who processes lab samples, and runs the appropriate tests.
The process of being tested for Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) or alternatively, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) begins with calling Alternatives to make an appointment. It is possible to get an appointment on a walk-in basis, but calling ahead makes it easier to fit it into your schedule and be seen in a timely manner.
When you arrive for your appointment, you will be asked to provide identification and some introductory information. Following that, one of our clinic nurses will call you back to a private room for the testing and follow-up conversation.
What Tests Can I Have Done?
We currently test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and syphilis. You can decide which STD and STI tests you would like, or just go ahead and receive all four. If you are a female, you will be asked if you would also like to have a pregnancy test.
Testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and pregnancy is performed on a urine specimen, while HIV and syphilis testing require a simple finger stick and a drop of blood. Both syphilis and HIV tests can be performed simultaneously on the same specimen.
When Do I Get My Test Results?
Your tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea will be done at a lab off-site. The urine specimen you provide will be prepared and sent to the lab to be processed. Your free STD test results will then be available to you within three business days. You will need to make an appointment at the time of testing to return for your results, as they are not given over the telephone.
HIV and syphilis test results will be provided to you at the time of your visit. The same is true for pregnancy test results.
What Happens if I Test Positive?
First of all, we will follow up and ensure you either receive free STD treatment at our facility or that you are referred to an appropriate place to get the treatment you need. Any treatment you receive from Alternatives will be accompanied by written instructions and will be reviewed with you at the time of your visit in order to best achieve an optimal outcome.
Currently, Alternatives is able to provide chlamydia and gonorrhea treatment free of charge. If you were to test positive for HIV or syphilis, we would direct you to the local Health Department for further testing and treatment according to their policies and procedures. Secondly, please note: all positive STD results are required by law to be submitted to the local health department. We will report positive results as mandated and will discuss this requirement with you at the time of testing.
Our goal is to meet you in our comfortable and professional environment and to provide you with the best care, information, communication, and treatment possible at no charge to you.
